A bit of history

Barnsley Squash Club first opened at Shaw Lane on the 1st February 1974 with two courts and no changing rooms. Players changed some thirty yards away in the Cricket Pavilion/Clubhouse. This proved to be an unsatisfactory arrangement once the cricket season started, therefore two large sheds were purchased and placed near to the squash complex entrance. By 1976 the club were able to build separate ladies and gents changing rooms complete with showers and toilets. This provision  continued for some time but due to the popularity of the game in the town, it was decided in 1981 to build two more courts which were eventually opened in 1982 financed with the help of a grant from the Sports Council. Following the acquisition of the site by Barnsley Rugby Club in 2001, the courts were linked into a brand new clubhouse complex. The game and the club continued to go from strength to strength and an additional exhibition court was built in 2002 to satisfy demand.

With a membership of approximately three hundred, the Club has a good mix of male, female, student and junior players and for the latter there is free coaching throughout the season plus a summer school. Barnsley Squash Club has always fielded teams in both the Yorkshire Leagues and Sheffield and District Leagues. It runs its own internal leagues and club championships for members. With a good history of being both strong and competitive, the club is in a healthy position to have a great future and as testimony to this, the club has recently been awarded the Silver Club Certificate of Excellence by England Squash.
